The only major that starts with a group stage, so everybody who turns up gets at least three televised matches.
The Grand Slam is an invitational built around players who have reached major finals and semi-finals, plus the top of other countries’ rankings. That mix, and the group format, is why it produces pairings you would never get from a straight knockout.
The group stage also makes it the friendliest major for a neutral. Nobody is eliminated on the first night, so the tournament builds rather than thins out.
The format
- A round-robin group stage first. Everyone plays three group matches, and the top two in each group go through.
- Straight knockout from there, played in legs, with the matches getting longer as the rounds go on.
- Because group results can come down to leg difference, the final night of groups often matters more than the score in any single match.
How players qualify
- Invitational. Places go to players who have reached major finals and semi-finals over the qualifying period.
- Further places go to the top of other countries’ respective rankings, which is what gives the field its unusual spread.
