Which channel is the darts on?
UK coverage is split between two broadcasters, and it stays split for the next couple of seasons.
- Sky Sports has the World Championship, the Premier League, the World Matchplay, the World Grand Prix, the Grand Slam of Darts and the World Cup of Darts.
- ITV4 has the World Masters, the UK Open, the European Championship, the Players Championship Finals and the World Series events including the Finals. ITV4 is free to air, so those seven or eight weekends cost you nothing to watch.
If you only have one of the two, ITV4 gets you the UK Open and the European Championship for free, and Sky gets you the Worlds and Blackpool.
What the different formats mean
The majors are not all the same game, and the format changes who wins.
- Sets (World Championship, World Grand Prix): first to three legs wins a set, first to a number of sets wins the match. A bad patch costs you one set rather than the match, so favourites recover more often.
- Legs (World Matchplay, most others): straight race. At the Matchplay you also have to win by two clear legs, which is why it produces long finishes.
- Double start (World Grand Prix only): you must hit a double to open a leg as well as to close it. Averages collapse and seeds go out early.
- Group stage (Grand Slam of Darts): round robin first, so everyone gets three televised matches before the knockout.
